# Check an AI image: is there evidence inside?

I read the provenance evidence that AI tools write into image files and show you which EU label would fit.

## How I check.

1.  01**You choose images**Up to 20 at a time, each up to 20 MB, as JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF. Check the files as they came out of the tool. They stay on your device.
2.  02**I read the file**I look for the provenance evidence that AI tools write into it: C2PA / Content Credentials and IPTC DigitalSourceType. I do not assess the pixels.
3.  03**You see finding and label**For each image I show what I found and which EU label would fit: AI GENERATED or AI MODIFIED.

## What evidence is and what it is not

Evidence**Marker in the original file**The tool that created or edited an image writes it in, with tool, action and date. That is all I look for.

Hint**A detector's estimate**A detector calculates a probability from the pixels. The image check here uses no hints.

No AI evidence**No marker, no statement**I found no marker. That says nothing about how the image was made.

**Unreadable** means: the file cannot be read, for example because it is damaged or the extension does not match the content.

### Are my images uploaded?

No. I read the files here in your browser; they do not leave your device. The report is created on your device too.

### Why does the checker find nothing in my AI image?

Many tools write no marker, and some export paths delete it again, for example screenshots, compression or some upload services. Images you download from a store are re-encoded copies too: of 38 markers, the delivered copy still carried 6 on September 30, 2026 (lakör measurement). No AI evidence only means: I found no marker. Ideally, check the original file as it comes out of the tool.

### Which tools write evidence?

Measured by lakör on September 1, 2026: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Canva and Shopify Tinker write a marker, and at Magnific so do the model families GPT, Google Nano Banana, Seedream, Recraft and Ideogram. Adobe Firefly only writes a reference to an online manifest, which I do not resolve. Shopify Magic (“Generate background”) writes nothing; Midjourney has not been measured. Which tools do it, and whether the marker survives export, keeps changing.

### Do I have to label every AI image?

Not every one. What matters most is whether the image looks like a real photograph. The assessment guide in the result and the guides explain the criteria. Whether an image requires a label is your decision.

### What is C2PA?

An open standard for provenance data, known as Content Credentials. Tools write a signed manifest into the file: which tool, which action, when. Alongside it, I read the IPTC value DigitalSourceType.

### Do you verify the signature?

No. I read the C2PA manifest and show who issued it according to the certificate. Whether the signature is valid, I do not check.

### Does the checker use AI?

No. I read the file with fixed rules; no AI assesses anything here.

### How do I label across my whole store?

With the app. I check the original files in your Shopify admin and suggest labels, you confirm, and a theme block shows the EU label in the store. Images without a marker you label yourself with one click.
